This is especially true in terms of finding romantic partners or " hook up " partners. The following study examined motives for using online dating websites and mobile dating applications, as well as attitudes toward those platforms, and demographic differences related to their use. A survey of college students revealed that the primary reasons for using cyber dating platforms are " Fun, " " Relationship, " and " Hook Up. In addition, individuals with high self-esteem were less motivated to use cyber dating to hook up. Older users and women were more likely to use them for relationship reasons. Theoretical contributions of this study relate to our understanding of uses and gratifications theory and theory of reasoned action. ZarMina Gull.Hassan Sahib. Online dating applications have revolutionized the way humans connect with each other. Online dating services market was valued at 6 million dollars in and is projected to reach 9 million dollars by Thomas When this study was conducted for this phenomenon, results show some interesting findings, e. More specifically, this thesis investigates the type of subscription that generations prefer and whether it influences perceptions of online dating and usage of the applications. The methods used in this thesis involve conducting interviews to build a thematic framework and later on a survey analysis on respondents, thus using a quantitative and qualitative approach to gather data. Some of the key findings of this research revealed that dating applications are no longer associated with finding love only, but carry the purpose to enlarge the circle of friends and be more socially appreciated by the today's society standards. Moreover, dating applications are used as a coping method to deal with loneliness and give the users of dating applications a place to forget their problems in real life. The aim of this thesis is to explore the different behaviors and attitudes on online dating applications from multi-generations perspectives. Christoph Lutz. The widespread diffusion of location-based-real-time-dating or mobile dating apps, such as Tinder and Grindr, is changing dating practices. Based on a survey collected via Mechanical Turk, we assess how Tinder users perceive privacy concerns. We find that the users are more concerned about institutional privacy than social privacy.

The Gamification of Dating: Tinder and Game-playing on Reddit communities A thesis presented

Moreover, different motivations for using Tinder — hooking up, relationship, friendship, travel, self-validation and entertainment — affect social privacy concerns more strongly than institutional concerns. Kaan Altan. International Journal of Social and Humanities Sciences. Dating apps have become a worldwide trend since Tinder. The predominantly Anglo-American literature generally pays less attention to how they are used in and affected by different cultural contexts. First, the paper finds that although Tinderers mostly use the app for casual sex, socialization and entertainment emerged as other popular motivations. Lastly, unlike the Anglo-American contexts, we find that the social stigma around Tinder in Turkey is more likely to affect women who limit their use to contexts that they associate with privacy. Defining Tinder as an algorithmic cultural object, this paper highlights how technology and culture are intertwined in a relation of co-production. Laurens de Rooij. Jamie Foster Campbell, Ph. Of the negative outcomes associated with initial relationship development, rejection is among the most potent. Although previous research has examined the patterns of behavior surrounding romantic rejection within face-to-face interaction and traditional online dating e. This study fills the void by examining how rejection occurs within these applications by identifying the behaviors, effects, and outcomes associated with experiences of rejection. To do this, an online questionnaire analyzed how 68 mobile daters described rejection in this context. Results from open-ended questions were coded using thematic analysis and examined for term frequency and co-occurrence through semantic network analysis.

The findings indicate the extent to which mobile dating apps mitigate experiences of rejection and highlight the unique affordances of mobile dating, which are unlike those of traditional online dating. Tanha Gowande. This research was conducted to study what are the prime motives of cyber relationship and how it is associated with online self-disclosure and cyber violence. Pearson product moment correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze whether the variables have a significant positive correlation and to check whether motives of Cyber relationships had any cause and effect relationship with online self-disclosure and cyber violence. All these participants were administered the cyber relationship motives scale, self-disclosure scale, and scale of cyberbullying and victimization. It was found that there was a significant positive correlation between motives and the amount intent, valance in self-disclosure. Cyber violence had a low to moderate correlation with cyber relationship motives. Implications of the findings for future research to explore online self-disclosure and online violence within an existing framework of cyber relationship motives are discussed. This might change the way individuals portray themselves as their authentic or deceptive self. Based on survey data collected via Mechanical Turk and using structural equation modeling, we assess how Tinder users present themselves, exploring at the same time the impact of their personality characteristics, their demographics and their motives of use. We find that self-esteem is the most important psychological predictor, fostering real self-presentation but decreasing deceptive self-presentation. Demographic characteristics and psychological antecedents influence the motives for using Tinder, with gender differences being especially pronounced. We put the findings into context, discuss the limitations of our approach and provide avenues for future research into the topic.
