A study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking suggests that dating apps are especially alluring for men and women with social anxiety and depression. Despite this allure, dating apps do not necessarily eliminate the dating struggles faced by this population — at least not for men. The data revealed that men with greater social anxiety and depression symptoms were less likely to reach out to matches. In particular, people with social anxiety carry heightened fears of rejection and may withdraw from approaching potential romantic partners. People suffering from depression may avoid social gatherings and miss out on opportunities to meet others. When mobile dating apps emerged onto the scene, people who tend to avoid in-person socializing likely welcomed an opportunity to meet partners an easier way. As researcher Ariella P. Lenton-Brym and her colleagues say, these dating platforms offer a host of advantages that were likely recognized by people suffering from anxiety and depression. Until now, no study had explored the use of dating apps among this population. The researchers recruited participants to complete a survey that questioned their use of dating apps. Participants were also asked about their motivations for using the mobile dating app Tinder, by rating the extent that they used the app for love, casual sex, ease of communication, self-worth validation, thrill of excitement, and trendiness. In line with their suspicions, the researchers found that social anxiety and depression symptoms were linked to increased use of dating apps. The motivations for using these apps were somewhat similar among male and female respondents. Among both men and women, greater social anxiety and greater depression symptomology were both linked to a higher likelihood of using dating apps for the ease of communication, for casual sex, and for self-worth validation. However, the study authors noted an overall pattern whereby women with symptomology were more likely to endorse motivations for using dating apps. For example, only among women was greater social anxiety linked to using the apps for love. Again, only among women, both greater social anxiety and greater depression were linked to using dating apps for the thrill of excitement.

10 Ways to Overcome Social Anxiety in Online Dating (According to a Psychotherapist)

Another gender difference emerged when it came to the decision to reach out to dating matches. Men with greater social anxiety or greater depression reported being less likely to initiate contact with a match they were interested in. Among women, neither social anxiety nor depression affected their likelihood of being the first to engage with a match — instead, women were unlikely to initiate contact regardless of their symptomology. The researchers say that these findings likely reflect gender norms that expect men to make the first contact in a romantic scenario. These findings also suggest that dating apps do not completely eliminate the hardships associated with dating as an individual with social anxiety or depression. Lenton-Brym, Vincent A. With my brain going a million miles per minute, there was about a 90 percent chance I was going to say something silly and incoherent the first time I met someone new. What do I say? Do I compliment her? Girls like compliments, right? What if I come off as creepy? How does my hair look?

Do I have anything in my teeth? Does she know how nervous I am? With dating apps, I believe that problem is eliminated. Anxiety for me is a lack of control. Phone anxiety and social anxiety often go hand in hand. One of the worst parts about phone anxiety is the silence. My worst nightmare was talking to a female on the phone and there being any type of awkward silence because again, a million thoughts would go through my head. Should I say something? What if we say something at the same time? Should I let her talk first? I probably screwed this up. No thank you.

Much like the ice breaker, I can carefully craft whatever I want to say. Now, I will say this, something I had to work through was when she would take forever to reply. Also, am I the only one who thinks read receipts were purposely made to trigger people with social anxiety? But as someone with social anxiety, I have to. Being able to see what her interests are gives me plenty to talk about and get to know the person. A huge part of my social anxiety on the first date is wondering what to talk about, if we have anything in common and where the other person stands on certain issues. With dating apps, I can talk to a person for days or even weeks before I step into the same room as them. I believe getting to know each other online first can make getting to know them in person better because you can connect on a deeper level than most people would ever connect on a first date. You can ask them if their co-worker did that annoying thing they were telling you about. You can follow up to see how their friend is doing with that breakup they just went through. You can ask them about if they caught up on the TV show you both have in common. The opportunities are endless, and it makes the first date far easier to deal with because you already know a bit about the person. Best of all, through our previous talks, I can get a pretty good idea of whether or not I should make the move for a kiss at the end of the night, if it goes well. Today, my social anxiety is virtually nonexistent in all other aspects of my life, which is why I work with others who are still struggling with it and also wrote a book about overcoming my anxiety. But even with my minimal symptoms of social anxiety, dating is still an obstacle I deal with. My relationship began through the beautiful world of dating apps!
