I wonder how many American citizens were turned away from entering College in September because they lost their source of funding? Don't forget to thank your government. Pittsburgh too is pretty much a redneck town. Oh sure, there are 'some' city-slickers, but for the most part, it's about as hillbilly as an area can get. I work downtown and I see more rednecks than 'city' type people. It's so funny that the folks in Pittsburgh think they are so cosmopolitan, when in reality they are not! Are there wealthy people in Pittsburgh? Sure and they are the rich-hicks. Western PA is about as red necky as it gets! Yeah Pittsburgh is a blue collar down Wasn't is John Murtha who said Western Pennsylvania was full of racist red necks? Originally Posted by TheTaylorFund. Originally Posted by Pureblood. Welcome to City-Data. This post reminds of my Grandfather. He had hillbilly written all over him. He lived in Grand Valley, which is in Warren Co. I believe. He was very redneck in regards to having about 30 cars on his land dating from the 50's's. If strangers came on his land he would greet them with a 12 gauge. And he had an honest to goodness bronze spitoon that he used daily. He wore flannel shirts and had the weirdest "Pennsyltucky" accent that I ever heard So yes, Pennsylvania does have a lot of "hillbilly's", but they are some of the kindest, hard working, and honest people I have ever met.

Linguist Sterling Eisiminger, based on the testimony of informants from the Southern United States, speculated that the prevalence of pellagra in the region during the Great Depression may have contributed to the rise in popularity of the term; red, inflamed skin is one of the first symptoms of that disorder to appear. The term "redneck" in the early 20th century was occasionally used in reference to American coal miner union members who wore red bandanas for solidarity. The sense of "a union man" dates at least to the s and was especially popular during the s and s in the coal-producing regions of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
