A dating show wasn't part of the plan earlier that year, when he first considered launching a production studio and creative agency focused on Armenian stories. But, dating is what Abaci calls a "spiderweb," in which the various threads of history and culture are connected. Its ten-episode first season followed 11 Armenian Angelenos in their 20s and 30s as they looked for a potential love match. The show's catch: Some of their families would meet their dates before they did. As the dates got acquainted with each other, and with the families, viewers learned about food and, perhaps, even picked up a few Armenian words and phrases. More importantly, though, they got a glimpse into the lives of the Millennial and Gen Z cast, all of whom were maintaining connections to tradition in 21st-century Los Angeles. Moreover, viewers would see how L. Raised in Silicon Valley, Abaci grew up in a small, but tight-knit Armenian community revolving around St. Andrew's Armenian Apostolic Church in Cupertino, where his family was active and Abaci himself served as a deacon. During the summers, he headed to an Armenian summer camp, connecting with kids who shared more of his background than his classmates at the public schools he attended. He started Miaseen , which is Armenian for "together," to do just that. With a full-time staff of three people and a roster of freelancers that ebbs and flows with various projects, Miaseen takes a broad approach to telling Armenian stories. They collaborated with non-profit relief organization Kooyrigs to tell the stories of people in Armenian villages that were impacted by the war. They've produced marketplaces and immersive events at their studio, located on the edge of Glendale bordering Los Feliz and Atwater Village. They've also created a handful of web series, including " Arm ," where comedians breakdown the various dialects of Armenian language, and " Studio Sessions ," which highlights Armenians in the music industry. Miaseen's work highlights the fact that there is no single Armenian experience. That means digging into the multi-faceted identities of the people they spotlight.
This Armenian Dating Show Doubles as a Lesson in Geopolitics and Culture
Everybody is their own main character," says Abaci. That's why we've stayed around for so long. But, there's not an emphasis on individualism, even individual in terms of, what ideas can you bring to the table. The balance between Armenian and American culture — of being "Armenian enough," as they say — is something that comes up in conversation often at Miaseen. Alique Derderian, who joined Miaseen as an intern in and is now an associate producer, offers some personal perspective. In this midst of this turmoil, Miaseen temporarily halted the online casting campaign, yet Abaci continued to see messages from people who were excited about the project.He read those messages in between checking updates on the war that was unfolding and had a revelation: What if Miaseen could be a platform to spread joy as well as awareness? While "The Armenian Dating Show" was filmed in late spring and early summer of , the shadow of the war looms in the background, as some cast members do discuss its impact on their relationship to Armenian culture. Just as the war didn't really end with the ceasefire — tensions have remained high and periodic clashes have occurred throughout and — that fear of what many refer to as an "existential threat," the loss of Indigenous homeland that remains in Armenian hands, hasn't faded either. In fact, the war plays into the series to such an extent that Abaci says his proudest moment was that, by the end of the shoot, the crew — which included Armenian and non-Armenian people — could all properly pronounce Artsakh. On its surface, "The Armenian Dating Show" is as its title states, but, underneath that, it's a look at the lives of Armenian Americans in Los Angeles when a present-day event triggers a look back into a tragic history. It's a way of documenting a particular community at a critical point in time. He adds, "I know it sounds silly that a dating show is that cultural artifact, but what else is? World on Fire. But since then I have discovered that there is a natural culinary connection between the two cultures. Through the communion of food, the tradition of breaking bread, our families have gotten to know and love each other. From the moment our families met, I knew we would mesh well. Tony, I was thrilled to find, had a whole ritual that revolved around his food including photographing his favorite meals and placing them in a special album. Every afternoon he would make himself a plate of mezze little bites of things such as olives, nuts, Armenian string cheese, celery and carrots to go with his requisite martini. This was reminiscent of my father, who, every day before dinner, makes himself a plate of botanas — some almonds, olives and thinly sliced radishes with a dash of lemon and a sprinkle of salt — to accompany his glass of sherry. At family barbecues, Uncle Tony would grill lamb shish kebabs marinated in lemon, garlic and parsley. His sister-in-law Mary made stuffed grape leaves, known as yalanchi , and a delicious pilaf with a sinful amount of butter and a mountain of dates and sliced almonds as garnish. In our family, we would grill carne asada , marinated in garlic and cilantro, complemented by a helping of either red, white or green rice. My father-in-law, Sam, also loved the kitchen. In our home on Sundays, my father always donned his green apron, put on some boleros and cooked elaborate meals such as grilled steaks, wild mushrooms with garlic and parsley, and roasted baby potatoes with cilantro and lemon, giving my mom a much-needed break. It was catered by Carousel, the well-known Armenian restaurant in Hollywood, now expanded into Glendale. The Armenian string cheese reminded us of a lighter, milkier version of Oaxaca cheese. Mexicans are accustomed to eating Arabic-influenced food not only because of the Moorish tradition that came from Spain but also because of a large influx of Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. While yalanchi and pilaf are a requisite on Christmas Day, this year, cousin Jeff also experimented with Mexican flavors by making a tasty grilled turkey with a habanero chile and sausage stuffing.Sadly, Sam and Tony have died. Living a life as Armenian as possible, so to speak, was perceived as a duty, coming as it did in the wake of a rich and vibrant culture being almost completely annihilated in In some sense, this was a natural reaction. How it played out depended a great deal on where a given community ended up. In the case of Brazil, four generations in, the Armenians have become more than just inhabitants in a host country, rather they are fully actualized citizens of a nation, if not citizens of the world. The struggle of fitting into a mainstream environment has vanished in many respects. The challenge of manifesting Armenianness has taken more fluid and nuanced forms across a spectrum of possibilities. Three Brazilians shared their stories and perspectives on this front. Their insights speak to universal themes which all diasporans will recognize—identity, integration, assimilation, pride, and engagement. The snapshot of the Brazilian-Armenian community they offer reflects on the past, present, and possible future of the Armenian experience. He represents perhaps a dying breed. Growing up, he had four Armenian grandparents, spoke the language at home and ate the food. And I have traveled extensively throughout Brazil. It is a place I understand, I feel good in, I accept.
At the same time, I never wanted to escape my Armenian side, because it also feels good. I have traveled extensively throughout Brazil. For Marcelo Mirzeian, a business professional, discovering and expressing an Armenian identity took a different path. He comes from a younger generation and a family with roots from a few different places. When I was born, only my grandmother was alive, so all the stories I have from my family were from her. I grew up without any contact with the Armenian community. He began his Armenian explorations pretty much from scratch, and although he found a welcoming community, there was something lacking. Most sites had scant information about Armenian places and almost none had updates on activities or events in the community.

Most of the content was about the history and culture of Armenia, and all in English. Mirzeian decided to do something about it. He created a web page of his own that has more content in Portuguese for others who are curious about their ethnicity or just interested in things Armenian. A couple of years later, he upgraded the website to a portal, which disseminates up-to-date news on Armenia, the Diaspora, and events in Brazil. Mirzeian works with a handful of friends and active community members. But we also have new projects that intend to create a bond with Armenian culture and history. Add to this their online radio show, a T-shirt webstore, Armenian film exhibitions, a podcast, and a YouTube channel. Historian genocide scholar and lecturer Heitor Loureiro does not have any Armenian ancestry at all. Yet he tells anyone who asks that he was first drawn into the Armenian world through the rock group System of a Down and cemented the connection by marrying a Brazilian-Armenian woman later in life. Some of these institutions closed their operations. People started attending April 24 demonstrations, concerts and lectures and even meeting wannabe dates, forming new nuclear families. However, people would only actually meet in person in April. Over the same period, however, a significant generation gap has also arisen between older members of the community who are still in charge of the clubs and churches, and younger Brazilian-Armenians, who spend less and less time at mass or playing belote or tavli. It is an ongoing tension, though not necessarily a destructive one. What is that? What does that mean? I think there is something going on, though, for the last five to ten years, as the youth have become interested. The bishop organizes a youth group to travel to Armenia every year. They return impressed. Mirzeian agrees that although he has been in contact with the community for a little over a decade, it is possible to see cycles of renewal in the young Armenians.Its strong influence continues today.
